Our story
Dee Dee and Jason discovered Kubb in 2011 after a co-worker suggested “You should Google “Kubb” and make two sets. One for you and one for me.”

Before Kubb
It all started with the Nerd Herd. In 2009 a group of co-workers decided to form a Relay for Life team. (Oh, did I mention they all worked in computer support?)
Over the years team Nerd Herd has evolved. We’ve added friends and family from outside the tech field, but our goal has never changed. Raising money for the American Cancer Society. We’ve had various fundraisers: craft sales, garage sales, bake sales, jewelry sales, survivor bracelets, hats, scarves, raffle tickets, digital scrap books, waffle breakfasts and food truck sales. Pretty much anything we could think of to raise money for our Relay for Life team.

Enter Kubb
June 11th, 2011: Jason and Dee Dee made two kubb sets out of pine. With a limited knowledge of the rules and nothing about the strategies, they played with niece Danielle and nephew Nick. About 45 minutes into game play, they identified the challenges and parts that made it so fun. They played for 2 hours that Saturday and a few more hours the next day.
Jason and Dee Dee learned about official Kubb rules and the existence of Kubb tournaments. On Feb 2, 2013 they observed the Minnesota Kubb Loppet Tournament held on the frozen waters of lake Bde Maka Ska.
A few of us decided to take our love of playing Kubb and use that to help raise money to fight cancer. That is how Kubbing to Kick Cancer was born.
On June 15, 2013, the Nerd Herd had its first-ever Kubb tournament at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Kasson, Minnesota. Twelve teams showed up and played, making it a fun and successful day. We were thrilled to see that over half of the teams that came had never played before, so we thought we did a great job! By the end of the day, we had raised over $1,100. Little did we know that the Kubb community is all about raising money for a good cause.
2025 marks the 12th year of hosting the Kubbing To Kick Cancer tournament.
This event couldn’t continue without the help of our friends and family that have helped over the years. Thank you to Shelly, Sabrina, Alvie, Sharon, Jan, Kathy, Tyler, Danielle, Nick, Andria, Kaydee, Charlie, Hartlyn, and Bodie.
